The Deseret News, founded in 1850, is owned by the Mormon church. It was named for the "State of Deseret," the name given the Utah Territory by Brigham Young. Since 1952, the Newspaper Agency Corporation has jointly printed and distributed both The Deseret News and its historical arch rival, The Salt Lake Tribune (founded in 1871). The newsrooms and editorial boards of the two papers remain separate.
