Kouya (夜更) is the Chinese (on'yomi) reading of yofuke (夜更け), which means "in the middle of the night" or the "small hours" (see the first definition offered by Eijirou).

Thank you so much for the translation. It is wonderful to read another story from the Twelve Kingdoms world.
At the first mention of Kouya I thought he was Taiki, but the date is 500 years too early. Rokuta doesn't even consider the option of a black kirin. Could it be that none were born yet at the time? Could Kouya be the first? So many questions.
